Common questions
01What WiFi does the board need?
A 2.4 GHz network using WPA2 or WPA3-Personal, which most home routers provide. 5 GHz-only networks, work or school networks with a username login, and hotel or dorm networks with a sign-in page aren't supported.
Do I need an app or an account?
No. Everything happens in your phone's browser. Scan the QR code on the board's label, pick your WiFi, then add your stops at the address the panel shows.
The board couldn't join my WiFi. What now?
The panel and the setup page say why: network not found, password not accepted, weak signal or unsupported security. If you entered the wrong password, the board reopens its setup network on its own after three minutes so you can try again.
The panel says NO CONNECTION.
The board hasn't had fresh arrival data for three minutes, so it says so rather than showing old times as if they were live. It reconnects and recovers by itself. If it stays this way, check that your home internet is working.
Why is an arrival gray?
Gray means take it with a grain of salt: it's a scheduled time rather than a live one, a bus that has stopped reporting its position, or the last known time during a brief outage.
Which cities does it work in?
ArrivalTimes is made in Chicago and covers all eight ’L’ lines and every CTA bus route. Boston's subway and buses are supported too. More cities are planned, and boards already in homes pick them up without new hardware.
Will it send alerts to my phone?
The board shows service alerts on the panel and lists the full alert text on its setup page. For phone notifications, connect it to Home Assistant and use its detour sensor.
Who can change my board's settings?
Anyone on your home network can open the setup page. That's fine for most homes; it's worth knowing if you share your network widely.
What data does the board send?
Only what it needs to work, plus its restart reason once per boot so we can spot stability problems. There's no usage tracking. The privacy page has the details.
How do I find my board's serial number and firmware version?
Open the setup page and press Status. It shows the last update, WiFi signal, firmware version, serial number and whether an update is available.
